U2 has been named the oldest band on the planet.
The Dublin supergroup has won the title of longest active group in the world without a break or a change in roster.
Formed at school in 1978, Bono and his friends have been together for 36 years – nine years older than their closest rival Radiohead, who is still rocking after 29 years.
The Rolling Stone musical bible, which conducted the research, hailed the four guys as one of “rock & roll’s greatest accomplishments” for their artistry and marathon endurance.
The magazine said: “Friendship, health and serendipity have kept founding members Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr together since 1978.
“[U2] lead an elite group of groups who fought death, drugs, dysfunction and ugly prolonged interruptions to keep their original formations intact.
The Rolling Stones were formed in 1962, but they did not make the list as the original lineup has changed over the decades. Larry Mullen founded U2 when he published a notice at his Mount Temple school in Dublin in 1976.
The group of teenagers who were originally called Feedback included the quartet with Dik Evans, the older brother of The Edge, but the famous quartet emerged in 1978 and was called U2.
The group is also in the lead in terms of productivity with 13 albums against eight for Radiohead.
The group is also in the Guinness Book of Records for its 22 Grammy Awards – the most for a group in history.
U2, on the cover of this month’s Rolling Stone, pledged to keep moving.
Being there until their 70s as the Rolling Stones, Bono said, “I don’t know – if we write songs as good as these.”
Adam Clayton, 53, added that he loved being in a rock band more than ever.
He said: “When you work up to 50, you think, ‘Oh, maybe there will be a time when we can relax and it will be slower, and we can enjoy the time a little. life “.
“And then when you kind of cross the 50% mark, you kind of think, ‘Oh, why would you want to quit? It is in fact the best.
“‘We really appreciate this, let’s continue.”
